WikiRaising chao
Animals
Twenty-one animals, what each does to your chao's stats, and the body parts they graft on.
Updated
Giving a chao an animal does two things: its stats move, and it takes on a piece of that animal’s body.
Animals are a gift rather than something a chao earns, so they also steer what it grows into. See evolution.
Stat effects
Every animal carries stat deltas from SA2B’s own AnimalAndDriveStats table,
added to the chao’s stat progress.
Two things to know:
- Deltas can be negative. A Penguin is an excellent swimming gift and takes 24 off power. Nothing in the game is a pure upgrade.
- No animal touches stamina. All 21 move some combination of swim, fly, run and power. For stamina, animals are not the tool.
The full table
Blank means the animal leaves that stat alone.
| Animal | Swim | Fly | Run | Power | Parts |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Penguin | +36 | +12 | +8 | -24 | Face, Arms, Legs |
| Seal | +40 | -16 | +8 | Arms, Tail | |
| Otter | +44 | -4 | +8 | -16 | Face, Ears, Arms, Legs, Tail |
| Rabbit | +8 | +40 | -16 | Ears, Arms, Legs, Tail | |
| Cheetah | -8 | -8 | +40 | +8 | Ears, Arms, Legs, Tail |
| Boar | -4 | -12 | +32 | +16 | Face, Ears, Arms, Legs, Tail |
| Bear | +8 | -16 | +4 | +36 | Ears, Arms, Legs |
| Tiger | -8 | -16 | +20 | +36 | Ears, Arms, Legs, Tail |
| Gorilla | -4 | -8 | +4 | +40 | Face, Ears, Arms, Legs |
| Peacock | +12 | +48 | -16 | -12 | Face, Legs, Wings, Tail |
| Parrot | +48 | -20 | +4 | Face, Legs, Wings, Tail | |
| Condor | +20 | +60 | -24 | +16 | Face, Legs, Wings, Tail |
| Skunk | +8 | +12 | +16 | +12 | Face, Arms, Legs, Tail |
| Sheep | +8 | +8 | +16 | +16 | Ears, Horns, Arms, Legs, Tail |
| Raccoon | +20 | +16 | +4 | +8 | Ears, Arms, Legs, Tail |
| Half-Fish | +32 | +8 | +24 | none, modifier | |
| Skeleton Dog | +8 | +8 | +32 | +16 | none, modifier |
| Bat | +8 | +40 | +8 | +8 | none, modifier |
| Dragon | +20 | +4 | +8 | +32 | Horns, Arms, Legs, Wings, Tail |
| Unicorn | +16 | +12 | +36 | Ears, Horns, Arms, Legs, Tail | |
| Phoenix | +12 | +32 | +4 | +16 | Face, Legs, Wings, Tail |
The Condor is the strongest single push in the game at +60 fly, and charges for it: -24 run, plus a bird’s legs whether you wanted them or not.
The ones with no downside
Nine of the 21 carry no negative, and they split by price.
Skunk, Sheep and Raccoon cost the standard 60 rings and spread small positives across all four stats. They nudge a chao without committing it, which makes them the safest gift for a chao whose type is unsettled.
Half-Fish, Skeleton Dog, Bat, Dragon, Unicorn and Phoenix cost 120, and are also free of negatives. That is part of what the price buys: the Dragon’s +32 power costs nothing, where the Gorilla’s +40 takes 8 off fly and 4 off swim.
The other twelve all cost you somewhere.
Body parts
A chao wears animal parts across seven regions: Face, Ears, Horns, Arms, Legs, Wings and Tail.
A chao shows one animal per region, so parts mix. Give it a rabbit and then a peacock and you get rabbit ears with a peacock tail, because the peacock has no ears to give.
No animal covers all seven. Wings come only from the four birds and the Dragon; horns only from the Dragon, Sheep and Unicorn. A Seal gives arms and a tail and nothing else.
Some parts arrive under an unexpected name. A Boar’s tusks and a Gorilla’s eyebrow are both Face parts, and a Dragon’s antennae ride the Horns region alongside its horns.
The three special animals
Bat, Skeleton Dog and Half-Fish grant no parts. They still move stats, and generously, but their job is to change something else.
| Animal | Effect |
|---|---|
| Bat | Removes a random part the chao is wearing, and can knock its feet off |
| Skeleton Dog | Can remove a random part, and restores feet the Bat took |
| Half-Fish | Swaps the floating accent above the chao’s head for a blue flame |
The Bat is the undo button and the Skeleton Dog is the repair kit. If a chao is wearing a part you regret, Bats take it back off one random part at a time.
Before using a Bat for its +40 fly: it may cost the feet, and only a Skeleton Dog puts them back.
The Half-Fish’s blue flame is not permanent the way a part is. A Bat or Skeleton Dog removes it.
Picking one
- A specific type. Give the matching stat and keep giving it. Type is decided by the strict leader, so a run of Otters beats a scattered handful. See evolution.
- A specific look. Work backwards from the Parts column. Wings mean a bird or a Dragon; horns mean Sheep, Unicorn or Dragon.
- Neither yet. Skunk, Sheep or Raccoon: all positive, nothing committed.
Animals cannot move alignment, and neither can any mini-game. Only Hero and Dark Fruit do that.
